Kenya is richly blessed in natural resources especially coffee, tea and sugar which make up a big chunk of Kenya's economic productivity. The Kenyan coast in Africa is known for its Swahili dishes and these often contain traditional Swahili ingredients of coconut, coconut milk, tropical fruit and fresh seafood.
A fine example of Swahili inspired food is Akoho Amin Boanio, a traditional chicken dish cooked with coconut milk and served with steamed rice.
Further inland, Kenyan’s love their traditional meat dishes. A firm favourite being Nyama Choma, which is meat slow roasted over a fire, served with a variety of green vegetables known as Sukuma Wiki and Ugali (a stiff maize flour porridge).

Mtuzi wa Samaki This recipe originated from Zanzibar. It consists of fish prepared in coconut milk curry, and often the fish is substituted by tasty shrimp.
Samoosas These are triangular delicacies stuffed with spicy meat or vegetables, notably of Indian decent.
Venison Kenya’s famous Carnivore Restaurant features a wide assortment of venison treats and game meats. Menu highlights may include warthog, wildebeest, zebra, ostrich and even crocodile!
International cuisine is readily available at all safari hotels and lodges, as well as at local restaurants in Nairobi and Mombassa.
Theme restaurants in Nairobi and Mombassa include Swahili, Indian, Japanese and fresh seafood.
Local Drinks
Tusker Lager The best selling Kenya beer, this is often considered Kenya’s national drink and comes in a formidable 1 ½ litre serving!
Muratina This traditional Kenya beer originates from the dominant Kikuyu tribe and is made from sugar cane and fruit.
Busaa This is the popular alcoholic drink of western Kenya, made from malt extracted from finger millet.
For visitors who love their coffee (Kahawu) but prefer it with a little Kenyan kick, Journeys2Africa suggests adding a dash of Kenya Gold. This coffee liqueur is best served over crushed ice, rounding off a day spent on an African safari.
