Namibia Culture
With 15 ethnic groups and various European colonial influences, Namibia has a rich cultural history attracting culture vultures from across the globe. The diversity in culture and the individual identities throughout the country makes travelling through Namibia extremely rewarding.
In Windhoek, the colourful Herero ladies with their bright headdress and sweeping skirts are a photographer’s delight. In the east towards the Kalahari Desert and Botswana, the Bushmen still live off the land. The remote areas of northern Namibia are home to the nomadic Himba people, and along the western coast German culture is still very prominent, especially in the little towns of Swakopmund and Luderitz.
Other ethnic groups in Namibia include the Damara, Nama and Ovambo.
Throughout the year, Namibia features festivals celebrated by the various ethnic groups – intent at keeping their proud heritage alive and untouched by globalisation.
Cultural interaction and expeditions can be arranged by Journeys2Africa.
