Culture in South Africa

South Africa is a relatively young country and still in search of a national identity. There are certainly plenty of ingredients to work with: 11 official languages, 16 ethnic groups, a plethora of political parties, and many unresolved issues. It is no surprise then that there is considerable diversity located under the term ‘South African’.

For visitors, all the cultural diversity can make for an exciting visit. Each group has it’s own traditions and cultural practices which can be fascinating to explore. An authentic Zulu dance, a visit to a Xhosa traditional healer, or a braai (BBQ) with an Afrikaans family can all be worthwhile excursions on your South Africa cultural tour.
Of interest to visitors will be the number of South African TV commercials by corporations building up the idea of one South African identity, founded on patriotism, integration and relinquishing the past to embrace a positive future.
