Here are some uniquely South African dishes to sample.

Bobotie – a Cape Malay dish of minced meat, spices, and a savoury custard.

Boerewors – a spicy sausage found at all sporting events and braais.

Biltong – the national snack food is dried, seasoned meat sticks best consumed with beer.

Chutney – South Africa’s answer to ketchup, this fruity relish goes well with any meal, especially boerewors, the local spicy sausage.

Nando’s chicken – yes, it’s fast food, but this international chain was founded in South South African Food - ChakalakaAfrica and the use of peri-peri spice is an authentically local touch.

Mashonzha – this classic African dish is made of Mopani worms, spiced, fried and a lot better tasting than it sounds.

Pap – the staple food for the majority of South Africans. Made from ground maize, beaten into a stiff porridge, and served with stew.

Chakalaka – a popular onion and tomato relish served with pap and boerewors.

Bunnychow – assorted fillings in a scooped out half loaf bread, usually a choice of curried lamb, chicken or beef.

 

South African Drinks

Here are some uniquely South African drinks and beverages to sample.

Wine
The Western Cape’s wines are well worth exploring. Many South African wines have won international tasting awards, a reflection of the growing quality of South African wines.

Beer
South African Breweries produce 97% of the local beer – popular brands include Castle, Carling Black Label and Hansa.

Mampoer
A highly alcoholic spirit alcohol, usually a home-brew. Can be compared to Moonshine or Schnapps.

Umqombothi
A traditional creamy African beer made from sorghum grain. Likely to be sampled on a ‘township tour’.

Amarula
A rich creamy liquor made from the fruits of African Marula trees. Delicious when splashed over crushed ice, or added in specialty coffees. Elephants love the fermenting fruit too.
