Shopping In Tanzania

Shopping in Tanzania is a rewarding experience. Tingatinga paintings, Maasai necklaces, precious stone jewellery and Mokonde wood carvings and sculptures and the traditional Tanzania khanga cloths have become sought after Tanzania commodities worldwide.

While shopping at the markets, bargaining is expected and bartering optional, but do not forget to keep it light hearted because for some of the vendors it is their only source of income. The best markets to shop at are Nyumba ys Sanaa and Mwembe Market.

Journeys2Africa Shopping Tip: Be sure to buy the beautifully vibrant traditional “khanga” cloths, they make quite a bohemian fashion statement. Exchange your money at the commercial banks or Bureaux de change. Generally shops and markets accept only the Tanzanian Shilling.

Credit cards are not accepted at the informal markets.
