Introduction To Zambia
Zambia presents the real Africa, as it is. With a rich heritage of Victorian explorers, mysterious river systems, secluded tented camps and walking safaris, Zambia is one of the most exciting and rewarding safari destinations in Africa.
Previously known as Northern Rhodesia until independence in 1964, Zambia shares its borders with Angola, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, the DRC, Tanzania and Malawi. With an area of about 470 380 square miles (752 610 square kilometers), curiously shaped Zambia is larger than the US state of Texas. Zambia is home to some of Africa’s most remote wilderness areas, filled with spectacular wildlife and a host of charming safari camps.
Located on a massive plateau averaging 4 200 feet (1 300 metres) above sea level, Zambia is dominated by two major river basins - the Zambezi River in the south, and the Congo River in the north. The mighty Zambezi River forms the southern border with Zimbabwe, and consists of some of the most spectacular tourist and safari hotspots.
From the majestic Victoria Falls (one of the Seven Wonders of the World) to the river dreamlands of Lake Kariba and the rugged Lower Zambezi, the legendary waterway is a highlight of any African safari.
The historical town of Livingstone (near Victoria Falls) offers intriguing insights to the past, as well as a rich collection of markets, museums and cultural villages. To the north, the remote regions of Kafue and Luangwa beckon visitors to venture off the well-worn tourist track.
Some wilderness guides may say that walking safaris were invented in Zambia. The wonderfully wild northern frontier of the North Luangwa offers possibly the best game viewing on foot in Africa. Game drives (during the day or night) are readily available and African animal sightings are nothing short of breathtaking.
Zambia offers a variety of safari activities. Canoe safaris on the Zambezi River afford visitors a unique form of game viewing whilst gliding silently down the river. Abundant birdlife, animals drinking along the riverbanks, elephants snorkeling, baboons jostling, crocodiles sunning themselves and hippos snorting are typical encounters on the Zambezi River.
Overland expeditions explore some extremely remote country. Fishing safaris are immensely popular here, the highlight being a wrestling tug’o’war with a tigerfish.
Adventure seekers and adrenalin junkies are kept entertained at Victoria Falls. Whether it be a bungee challenge off the bridge over the gorge, dodging rapids and rocks whilst white water rafting on the Zambezi, or a mild helicopter flip over the Victoria Falls, adventure awaits your arrival.
Zambia takes a step back in time, away from city lights, bustling corporates and global concerns. It is here that the little details captivate your heart and teach you the art of letting go, of truly unwinding from it all!
