Shopping in Zambia

Shopping expeditions in Zambia are bound to be vibrant, jostling, busy and fun.

As most of the country’s safari destinations are in remote outback regions, shopping opportunities are limited. The centres of Lusaka or Livingstone are often incorporated in a safari itinerary, and craft markets are easily accessible.

Be prepared for hard negotiating with vendors, and if you are paying in foreign currencies, Journeys2Africa recommends purchasing with low denomination bills as sellers are reluctant to give change.
On the outskirts of towns on the main road networks, there are numerous stalls where good quality carvings can be purchased under less frenetic conditions. People in the rural areas are also likely to trade clothes, shoes, caps or food in exchange for souvenirs.

Gift Ideas

Hosts of traditional markets and curio vendors are found in most centres where the most prized local goods include carvings, pottery, copperware, beadwork and local gemstones. Ceramics, batiks, candleholders, lampshades, cloth and handmade crafts are also popular.
