Food & Drink in Zimbabwe

Traditional Food

Mealie meal (almost like cornmeal) is the staple diet of Zimbabweans and is known locally as sadza. It can be flavoured with butter, milk and occasionally jam and served with vegetables such as marog (a tasty wild spinach), and especially meat.

In rural areas, beef or goat meat is prepared and healthy portions of protein are an important part of a Zimbabwean diet.

Small sardine-like fish called kapenta are caught in huge numbers in Lake Kariba and are an important protein supplement too.

A soup made from wild mushrooms, known as Nhedzi, is common in the wet season in more rural communities, as is mopane worms and flying ants. Don’t grimace! These are tastier than you imagine!
Hotels, restaurants and safari camps offer an excellent cosmopolitan cuisine. Zimbabwe beef is of top quality.

Traditional Drinks

A host of traditional beers such as Whawha (brewed from maize) or Chibuku (from maize or sorghum) are widespread, and a sour milk brew is also very popular amongst locals.

Some very good commercial beers such as Zambezi or Bollingers are fantastic to enjoy on a typically hot day after your safari.
